What is fixed orthodontic treatment (braces treatment)?
It is a form of orthodontic treatment applied after all milk teeth have fallen out and are replaced by permanent teeth (mean age 12 years). Orthodontic braces treatment lasts an average of 1-2 years. There are various types of braces for example metal or porcelain (ceramic) braces. The system applied to the inner surface of the teeth called lingual orthodontics. In this system, all braces placed on the inner surface of the tooth and the wire is not visible from the outside.
Does orthodontic treatment (braces) cause toothache?
As soon as the braces applied they will put a certain pressure on the teeth during the first week, which can cause some light toothache. These changes will return to normal within a week. The first few weeks are the adjustment process.
Does an orthodontic treatment change the colour of my teeth?
Brace treatment does not change colour of the teeth. When you observe good oral hygiene and consume tea, coffee and cigarettes with care, you may protect the whiteness of your teeth.
Is tooth extraction necessary for orthodontic braces treatment?
If the teeth are very crocked, if the jaw curvature, on which the teeth are located, is small or if the teeth are large it might be necessary to extract teeth. It recommended extracting the wisdom teeth since they can cause misaligned teeth.
How often do I need to come to the controls during my orthodontic (braces) treatment?
During the orthodontic treatment process, the control session interval ranges from 4-6 weeks.
What is a retainer? Can crocked teeth reoccur after the braces removed and the orthodontic treatment is completed?
During the removal of the braces, a thin wire (retainer) applied to the lower jaw and upper jaw on the tongue side.
This way the obtained results protected and the wire is not seen from the outside. The patient gets used to it within 1 week. It is recommended to keep this wire for at least 5 years.
Is there an age limit for orthodontic treatment?
There is no age limitation for dental orthodontic problems. In other words, even if the person is 50 years old and if there is sufficient amount of bone and a sufficient number of teeth, he/she can be treated with braces since teeth can move throughout the whole life. Orthodontic treatment can be performed at any age.
How should I care for my teeth during orthodontic treatment?
Patients receiving orthodontic treatment should brush their teeth twice a day and clean the brackets and spaces with an orthodontic toothbrush. Mouthwash might be used to achieve oral hygiene.
What should I eat during my orthodontic treatment?
Eating habits are important during orthodontic treatment. If the braces and wires break the treatment process gets longer, this is why following points must be taken in consideration;
Avoid hard and shelled foods and fruits with seeds
Avoid sticky foods such as gum and Turkish delight
Do not drink sodas
Eat your food in small bites instead of big ones.
